Icarus "Uncertain", Greek origin Nickname :: None Gender :: Male Species :: Canine hybrid Status :: Relationship with Daedalus Orientation :: Pansexual Site Link :: Link |
Personality ::
Cocky, reckless, daring, kind, compassionate, loyal.
As a sentient being, Icarus has lived for an awful long time, and has seen a lot of things over the years. He has seen empires rise and fall, tyrants take hold, revolutions and rebellions both positive and negative, and he watches on as simply a spectator. At least on the surface, he forbids himself to interfere, although he rarely actually sticks to it. There's just no fun in it that way, and what is the point in being an immortal if you can't enjoy it. His duties as an observer require him to be quiet, patient, and objective, but he just can not help himself. Patience was never one of his more prominent qualities... In fact, none of the required traits really were... In his youth he was very loud and excitable, to the point where he would do nearly anything to show off. He was unbelievably cocky, and over-confident, which lead him into making many foolish mistakes. Many of which got him into serious trouble, although it would have been a lot more serious had he been of a lower social standing, and he knew it. His main problem was that he was just always too daring for his own good, as he always wanted to push the boundaries, and see where that took him. Though he knew his place in the world, and was very capable of reining himself in when meeting with others of importance, being the good son that his parents needed him to be. Of course he has settled down a little now, as that is what time does to you, it slowly erodes away who you were, but he has managed to hold on with a tighter grip than most. He is still a bit arrogant and cocky, sometimes even to the point of snobbish, but he realises his mistakes at least, and will admit them. If he's wrong, he will say so, but that doesn't mean he won't fight to prove himself initially. Verbally anyway, he's not much of a physical fighter and would much prefer to run away from actual fights. He has come far from the attitude of his youth, but not that far. Being wrong does make him a little grumpy, but he'll usually get over it pretty quickly. After all, when you're going to live for eternity, why bother with petty grudges? They mean absolutely nothing to him. He has always been a kind, caring individual though, despite his attitude, and has always held a value for life in general. Sometimes it stemmed from his pity towards others for not having what he had, and other times it was something else, but he would always try and assist where he could. This compassion is what drew him to Daedalus all those years ago, and it didn't take long for him to fall head over heels for him. Unfortunately Icarus is fiercely loyal, and was willing to sacrifice himself for his loved ones, which came to pass before the gods' intervention. But this unwavering loyalty is just a part of who he is, and has changed his story forever.

History ::
Everyone knows the story of Daedalus and Icarus, the father and son who created themselves wings to escape from the tower they were being trapped in by King Minos on Crete... They know how the story ends for Icarus, who became too overconfident and flew too high, causing the wax in his wings to melt and the poor boy to plummet into the sea below and drown. What they don't know is that the myth, like many others, was actually inspired by a true story. One so unbelievable that it was reduced to simple myth. For Daedalus and Icarus did exist. Daedalus did create the labyrinth for Minos, and the pair were locked up to keep the secrets of the labyrinth from getting out. Deciding enough was enough, the pair plotted to escape. Not by sea, as all ships were being searched, but by air. It's a little different to the myth that is told today, but there are similarities.
Originally born a nobleman from an important and very wealthy family, Icarus spent his childhood exploring his family's property, socialising with those on the premises, and wondering about what was beyond it. He pretty much did what he was told, though only because after the first few times of disobeying, he became quite frightened of his father's wrath. He acted out in other ways, irritating the other members of the household, though he was always kind to the staff. When he was betrothed to King Minos' daughter as a partnership between two kingdoms, he just accepted the arrangement instead of fighting, not wishing to anger his father. He would just have to put up with it. When he went over to Crete to meet her though, things got a little out of hand. His attempts to improve the conditions for a poor servant boy ended up with him falling in love with the bastard son of a King, and ultimately with him being imprisoned and shunned by those around him. After all, behaviour like that was accepted in the lower classes as long as it wasn't spoken of, but in the upper classes? Not likely. Still, it wasn't quite the homosexuality that got him into trouble, although they did consider it disrespectful to Minos' daughter. He found out secrets that Daedalus knew about Minos' wife, and the deal with Poseidon. For that, and asking too many questions, he needed to be punished. So Daedalus worked night and day under the guise of a project for a member of Minos' family, and moved to free himself and Icarus the night before he was due to be executed for his disrespect to Minos' daughter.
Icarus' wings had been bound, but the binding was easy enough to remove. The wings were weak however from a lack of use, so they knew that they would not be able to both make it out alive should they be pursued. A plan was formed between them, and that night they prayed to the gods that it would work, for they only had one chance to get it right. They left in the early hours of the morning, getting some distance between them and Crete before they were spotted in the first light. Then came the sacrifice that inspired the myth. Guards were catching up to the pair, and Daedalus could only fly so fast on his false wings, so Icarus flew higher and higher on his own weak wings, pressing on higher until the heat from the sun blackened all his feathers. Chased by the guards, he continued until they had fallen back down themselves, his determination enabling him to go on. Finally giving up, with Daedalus far ahead and the guards realising that the prisoners were lost, he let go and fell back to Earth, landing in the water below badly burned but still alive. The gods took pity on him and honoured him for his sacrifice, granting him eternal life as a demi-god on Earth.
Their escape attempt earned them both their freedom, though cost Icarus many years in recovery time. By the time he was strong enough to fly again, this time as a demi-god, it was too late for Daedalus and the damage had been done. Still, he stayed with him, watching over his mortal love unable to interact with him, and pleading with the gods to end his punishment, until one day they finally decided it had gone on long enough, and allowed the pair to be together again.
Myths of their legendary escape spread, and over time the story was changed. No longer lovers but family, to appeal to the people telling the story. A father and his son, and the sacrifice of the son due to his own stupidity. Though if you really read between the lines, you'll see the true story, of the foolish behaviour of one lover to another, who sacrificed everything he had to be with the one he loved, only to be met with suffering. Still, after the pain, the pair were reunited, and have been inseparable ever since.

Relationships ::
Icarus grew up with very few children his own age, and so those that were around were practically an extension of his family. It was nice, but their social standing meant that he had to act a certain way in front of others, putting strain on any friendships he wanted with the staffs' children. This reason isolated him a great deal while he was growing up, so he later found it a little difficult to make friends in the proper way. He was particularly close with those who worked on the ships, as he spent a lot of time by the docks when he was young.
He was betrothed to King Minos' daughter from a young age, and was made to live in Crete with them early on, aged only 14. She was a little younger than him, and was kind and gentle, but neither of them loved the other. Still, they had accepted their marriage until Icarus complicated matters by falling for the servant boy that was also trapped on the island. As they became closer over the following year, Icarus learned a fair few things he shouldn't have known, and asked questions in all the wrong places. Eventually he was caught with this knowledge, his relationship with Daedalus was discovered, and he was sentenced to be executed. His wife-to-be tried to stop it, but she couldn't do much. So she set Daedalus a project to do, knowing that he could save them both. Despite there being no love between them, Icarus and her were very close.
His relationship with Daedalus was actually quite short, considering their feelings for one another. Icarus felt so strongly about Daedalus getting to safety that he didn't actually care about his own life, and sacrificed it so that Daedalus could live and reach safety. As it turned out, his sacrifice was rewarded by making him a demi-god, but with Daedalus a mortal and some leverage that the gods had over him, the pair were separated for a time. Daedalus waited for him, mourning his love, until the day that Icarus had finally succeeded in the task given to him by the gods and Daedalus could finally join him again. The pair are now practically inseparable, as they never want to go through that kind of heart break ever again.

Physical Information ::
Icarus is long and thin, not possessing a particularly muscular build. He's built for speed, and flight, rather than for fighting. His wings are very fragile, and can be easily damaged when out. His fur is thick and dark in colour, in varying shades of grey and black. Aside from the streaks of orange that is braided from some particularly lengthy strands of fur. On his head are two small horns in a similar shade of orange. He usually looks a little scruffy, particularly with his fur fluffed up. His tail doesn't much like being groomed properly any way. He is almost always seen wearing his collar. It has a simple design, but the jewel on the end of it is the important part for him as it was a gift from his mother. There are two gold bands around the collar that can be used to attach things to, should he need to carry anything. |

Short scenario
// A New Life //
Warnings - None in this snippet
An ill wind blew through the young canine's dark fur as their ship approached the harbour of the island ahead of them, forcing a chill down the length of his spine. Something was very wrong about this place, but Icarus couldn't quite put his finger on what it was. Not yet at least. Perhaps it was the solemn looks on the faces of his crew? Perhaps it was the desolate stretch of beach ahead of them, devoid of life except for a single envoy come to meet them by the edge of the water. He stared blankly at the approaching ship, not seeming to focus on anyone in particular, just staring with an emotionless expression. When that blank stare finally focused on him, another shiver was forced down Icarus' spine. This seemed like it was going to be a recurring feeling around here... No matter, his father had taught him to be brave. Especially in the face of mystery, as there was nothing more dangerous than that which you don't know.
A cold hand settled on his shoulder, making him look round to find out who it belonged to. Despite the physical chill in their hand, it was actually a surprisingly warm gesture, and succeeded in relaxing the young nobleman. He had spent many a day out by the boats, particularly when young, so some of these men were very good friends. To leave them behind in this manner was upsetting, but he knew that it was for the greater good. He was betrothed to a princess, what more could he ask for? But still it upset him. Though surely she felt the same way, so perhaps their shared fate was something to bond over, and maybe one day the pair might actually love one another as if they had not been forced together into this situation.
"We're here." The voice was soft and gentle, soothing his nerves for the moment. Nothing else was said between them, but when the pair's eyes met, there was a shared understanding of the way they were all feeling. They were all losing someone here, but there was no choice for any of them. His friends would stay for a day or two, to restock and maintain the ship, then they would return home without him. If he were a weaker man, he would have started crying there and then, but his father had taught him to be better than that. His own emotions could wait until he was alone, for now he knew he had to keep up appearances and make a good first impression on those that inhabited his new home. His betrothed and her family in particular.
Hesitantly, he took his first step off of the ship onto the dock, trying not to be bothered by the sinking feeling that was making it hard for him to breathe. The second step was easier, and the third even easier, but that first step into his new life was one that he knew he would remember for a long time. That feeling of hopelessness, sudden vulnerability... That would never quite be forgotten. Still, he knew he had to continue on, so he moved to greet the envoy, stopping in front of him and nodding his greeting.
The envoy made no move to greet him back, but Icarus didn't mind. He was likely not very important in the court, and not a part of his new family, or he would have attempted to learn a little about the young noble on their way back to the inhabited parts of the island. He mounted up onto the back of a horse, and gestured for Icarus to do the same. It was not something that the young noble was particularly used to, and it was a little uncomfortable with the way that his wings were tucked behind him, trying to avoid the saddle, but their pace was slow so he put up with the discomfort for the sake of politeness. His crew followed behind him at a respectable distance, not wanting to get too close in case the envoy wanted to speak to the young noble. But they rode in silence, reaching the outskirts of the city shortly.
They passed through the high outer walls, all admiring the architecture around them. It was finely made, and well designed to prevent attack while still containing the workings of the city within them. For a brief moment, Icarus and the crew thought they could spot another set of walls, outside of the city, but it was just briefly so they weren't sure what they had seen. Perhaps later Icarus would explore the island from the air, if they would allow him to do so, and then he could find out what that could have been. People were scurrying back and forth across the streets, though none got too close to their group as they passed by. They seemed respectful enough, although there was something else. Fear maybe? What was this King Minos really like if his own people were scared? Icarus could only hope he wouldn't have to find out.
As they approached the inner city, the structures grew even more spectacular. This was clearly where those of importance lived, and sure enough this is where the envoy stopped his horse. Icarus did the same, dismounting when the envoy did, then following behind him as grooms took the animals away. He put on a brave face as they walked towards his new home, trying to be optimistic. After all, he didn't have much of a choice in being here, so he might as well try and get used to it. The sooner the better, so why not now.
